Thalassotherapy with French brand Thalgo

The French have long believed in the restorative powers of thalassotherapy – using sea water as a form of therapy. In the past, Roman soldiers used hot seawater baths to recuperate after battle. Today, you don’t need to have post-battle wounds to enjoy thalassotherapy – simply enjoy it in seawater baths, pools and even facial treatments.

Sea water harbours marine extracts, minerals and trace elements that are found to be 10,000 times more concentrated than those found on land. Their biomimicry offers an affinity to our skin, and offers more oxygenation and negative ion levels that are 1,600 times more than that in cities, supplying a source of vital energy and well-being.

One of the pioneers of this is French brand, Thalgo. Started in 1966 by French pharmacist Andre Bouclet, the brand relies on a unique algae micronisation method that allows algae cells to release their nutrients while preserving the efficacy of the active ingredients. Andre filed a medical patent for three of the micronised algae, which were prescribed for skin, rheumatic and circulatory disorders.

By 1976, Thalgo set up a lab in the French Riviera. Being close to the Grasse, the fragrance capital of the country, Thalgo was able to create and convey the luminosity and revitalising powers of the Riviera’s sun-kissed waters in all its products.

Today, Thalgo is used in over 12,000 professional beauty salons and spas worldwide, including 500 hotel spas and 30 thalassotherapy centres in Europe.

Donna Beauty’s Source Marine Hydrating Facial – a treat for the senses

Donna Beauty believes in the regenerative powers of Thalgo’s marine algae. It is also one of Singapore’s leading beauty experts that carries the full range of Thalgo products and treatments in its centres.

The French Thalgo Source Marine Hydrating Facial (60 mins) is a three-part facial that infuses hydration for all skin types, though dehydrated and dull skin will benefit the most.

The first part of the treatment is an extensive cleansing ritual. It begins with a relaxing blend of essential oils over the face for gentle inhalation. Next, the therapist does a thorough skin analysis. The Thalgo Velvet Cleansing Milk is a delicate but effective cleanser that removes impurities without stripping the skin’s natural oils.

The cleansing ritual also involves deep cleansing with exfoliation, where a compressed mask soaked in Thalgo’s Micellar Cleansing Water softens the skin before extraction.

This stage of the treatment also allows the therapist time to shape your brows. The second part of the treatment is the piece de resistance: Thalgo Concentrate is applied on clear skin and, using Sequential Ultrasound technology, the concentrate is infused into your skin. This non-invasive treatment is cool and light, while the ultrasound aids in better penetration of the concentrate’s properties into the deeper layers of skin.

To further seal in the concentrate, the therapist performs a facial massage using Thalgo Cream. This facial massage is a soothing ritual that moisturises skin, allowing your skin to fully absorb the goodness of Thalgo’s marine algae nutrients.

The 60-minute facial ends with a carefully blended Thalgo Mask, concocted according to your skin type and condition assessed during the facial. It may be one for oil-control, hydration, or even to calm sensitive skin. While you let the mask work its magic, the therapist will perform a shoulder and hand massage to finish off the Source Marine Facial Therapy ritual.

Before you leave, you’ll be treated to Thalgo’s Source Marine skincare, with moisturiser and sunscreen applied on your skin. You’ll leave each session refreshed, radiant and with velvety skin.
